Dots + Stripes

I was so proud of myself for being tall enough to reach the leaves.

I love the little neighborhood my apartment complex is settled next to. It has some of the quaintest houses which makes spur of the moments walk like the one we had after a drugstore visit seem so idyllic. Even though the weather hasn’t been sunny like it was before finals week, getting some fresh air in the midst of studying was definitely a good decision. Hopefully once the sun decides to show its face again there can be many park visits to the three parks close to me–and of course a visit or two to the local ice cream shop 😉

Y’all have a wonderful weekend!

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

the best of the kinks album

short sleeve popover in arrow from jcrew

williams and sonoma bbq set

caddyshack dvd

dessert gallery lemon sqaures

1. One of their favorite albums on vinyl (if they have a turn table…if not stick with a good ol’ cd). For my dad, I chose an album by one of his favorite bands–The Kinks.

2. This J Crew shirt is great either for golfing or for wearing out for Father’s Day dinner.

3. This grill tool set from Williams & Sonoma is perfect for the grill enthusiast.

4. Caddyshack is by far the most quoted movie by my dad and my other half’s dad. If your dad doesn’t have this movie in his collection–buy him it!

5. Dessert Gallery’s lemon bars are ah-mazing. If there’s one near you, they give you the option of even ordering them online. If not, they have their recipe on their website for you to make them special for dad.

~Also, as a side note, I’ve recently just created an Instagram account for the blog! The username for it is @shortsweetandlovely. 🙂

Smells Like Teen Spirit

In honor of this being the last week of my current term and also of this school year– I give you “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. I remember the first time I heard this song, it was while my dad was driving me home from Catholic school way back when. Thus began my love for Nirvana. However, it wasn’t until junior high school that I fully began to appreciate not only Nirvana’s sound but also their angsty lyrics. I’ll always appreciate their music and how it touched me . Through Nirvana I learned the power of music and how it is one of the cheapest forms of therapy.

I hope y’all really do have a great day.

Addicted to Game of Thrones

Well, the first step when it comes to addiction is admitting you have a problem right? In that case then I can truly say I am addicted to HBO’s Game of Thrones. It all started in the Fall on one boring and wet and rainy weekend, during which I had watched the first two seasons in their entirety. Then I had to wait, just like everybody else, for Season 3 to begin. And good lord has it been one crazy season! My girls (and favorite characters on the show) Khaleesi and Aria have kicked up their bad-assery multiple notches. Some more Starks (my babies!!) have unfortunately passed away. And it seems now that King’s Landing has its very own Countess of Dowager in Lady Olenna of House of Tyrell. She is essentially now the new queen of sass in the show and I LOVE it!

As a way to cheer myself up on the account of tonight being the finale of Season 3, I’ve decided to try and post a little montage of some of the funniest things I’ve seen related to this season of GoT.

I hope this helps some of y’all out tonight while trying to cope with the Season 3 finale!

Summer Skin

Only Ben Gibbard can write such a lovely song about one of my Summer nightmares–summer skin. Having been blessed with oily hair and oily skin, I have had to combat the heat in many ways throughout Summer. One of the big reasons why I decided to cut off over a foot of my hair was due to the heat in Texas that was stifling not only in the Summer but during the entire year.

Having said all this, I’d personally consider myself an expert (not really…but in a way, yes) when it comes to beating all the beauty problems Summer weather can trigger. Below are some of my personal favorites that I use and others I know to help beat it.

pure and free liquid neutrogena sunscreen

Sunscreen that is Hypoallergenic and oil-free (or noncomogenic) is best so that it doesn’t clog your pores.

beeswax burts bees lip balm

Burt’s Bees lip balms have always come in handy and are so much lighter to use during the summer than lipstick.

pan oxyl foaming wash

Pan Oxyl Foaming Acne Wash is perfect for those (like myself) who have oily skin, which can sometimes result in back acne during the Summer months.

24 7 oil control blotting tissues

These tissues are such a blessing. I’ve learned from my mother to at least have two packages on hand.

maybelline great lash mascara

I’ve been able to use this mascara no matter what the temperature–just definitely get the waterproof kind for those sweaty days!

lorac foundation

This oil-free, paraben free and even fragrance free foundation is light and even those with oily skin can wear it during a hot one.

benefit dandelion blush

This lighter shade of blush, in comparison to Benefit’s other top seller CORALista, can work for the majority of skin colors and is more natural looking (in my opinion).

The main thing when working with makeup during the summer I’ve learned is just to try and be the most natural you can be. Also, do anything and everything you can to protect your skin and keep it healthy.

I hope this helps some of y’all out!

I had the wonderful privilege of being able to see The xx while they were in town last week. Comprised of Jamie Smith, Oliver Sim, and Romy Madley Croft, this indie-pop/dream-pop band that hails from London has some of the most relaxing and soothing to the senses (without dulling them) music. Their songs “Islands“, “Intro“, and “Shelter” are by far my favorites and I was so giddy as I heard the start up for each of them. Also, the light show that accompanied their performance was purely mesmerizing and I love the fact that they are a band that truly sounds just as good live as they do while listening to their album.

I highly recommend that y’all give them a listen!

Chambray Love

anthropologie tie dye chambray

kimchi blue chambray circle skirt from urban outfitters

topshop speckle roll mini chambray dress

madewell sleeveless chambray shirt in rose print

Chambray has always been a huge Summer staple. It’s coloring and light fabric makes it extremely versatile to where you can pair it with basically any type of bottom. I love though how some companies and brands have also turned this top fabric and used it for bottoms. The dresses and skirts that came out of the scenario are just as versatile as the tops along with being just as cute! Also, taking the ol’ chambray shirt and using the fabric for a print or for an eyelet top makes this fabric easily suitable for all lovely people.
